Things You Didn't Know About Clitheroe
The road “Whittle Close” in Clitheroe is named after Frank Whittle, the man who invented the jet engine. The rights to Whittle’s jet engine were sold in Clitheroe in December 1942 when the development of his jet engine passed from Rover to Rolls Royce, following a meeting at the Swan and Royal pub.

History
Clitheroe is rich in history with the centerpiece of the town being the early medieval Clitheroe Castle. Clitheroe Castle is believed to be of Norman origin, built in the 12th century and has laid witness to some of the most important battles in English history, with the keep being used in the War of the Roses and the English Civil War.
