Things To Do

A stand-out feature of Clitheroe is Holmes Mill, the site of the Bowland Brewery. The mill offers guests all sorts including a food hall, drinks hall, hotel and even an Everyman Cinema, making Holmes Mill a hub to socialise as you enjoy great local food and drink. There’s plenty of sport to get involved with too with local football, cricket, rugby, and bowling clubs to join or go down and spectate on your weekends. For the outdoorsy people, there’s plenty to do within Clitheroe’s rural surroundings, with the Primrose Community Nature Reserve to explore as well as plenty of popular walking routes within the local area with the Forest of Bowland, Pendle Hill and lovely local villages like Waddington on your doorstep.

Things You Didn't Know About Clitheroe

The road “Whittle Close” in Clitheroe is named after Frank Whittle, the man who invented the jet engine. The rights to Whittle’s jet engine were sold in Clitheroe in December 1942 when the development of his jet engine passed from Rover to Rolls Royce, following a meeting at the Swan and Royal pub.

Transport

In Clitheroe you can enjoy the rural surroundings whilst still benefitting from good connections with the busy neighbouring towns and cities. The Clitheroe to Rochdale line means you’re only ever a train ride away from larger local towns and cities including Blackburn, Bolton and Manchester, giving you plenty of choice for a day out shopping. Several bus routes also pass through Clitheroe, which means you’re only ever a bus ride away from the rest of Ribble Valley, Pendle and Preston. Situated just off the A59 it’s easy to get just about anywhere from Clitheroe by car with links right across the country.

History

Clitheroe is rich in history with the centerpiece of the town being the early medieval Clitheroe Castle. Clitheroe Castle is believed to be of Norman origin, built in the 12th century and has laid witness to some of the most important battles in English history, with the keep being used in the War of the Roses and the English Civil War.

Clitheroe is home to some great pubs and restaurants with establishments on what feels like every street! The small town is full of variety with great spots to go for a pint, enjoy a cocktail, have a quick bite to eat or enjoy some fine dining. We recommend you head to the Bowland Beer Hall to sample some award-winning beers from the Bowland Brewery, get down to The Parlour to enjoy a tasty cocktail or make your way over to Tom’s Table to try out some great food at the sophisticated bistro. Shopping

There’s a great range of independent shops in Clitheroe with everything on the busy high street, including fashion stores, interior shops, charity shops, hairdressers and more! The traditional market town still holds three market days a week with the bustling market making a perfect trip out with a range of stalls selling fresh produce, clothing, furnishings and much more. For your weekly shop, there’s plenty of choice with a large Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Tesco and Booths all within Clitheroe.
